Procrastination

Most of us today are procrastinators or pro-procrastinators. Some way or the other we keep postponing our things-to-do despite having a very empty calendar. Procrastination isn’t a quality, it is just a habit. So, just like all the bad habits, procrastination can be overcome by building counter habits that keep you from procrastinating.

Let’s figure out a few key habits that can be built, to overcome procrastination:

1. Set bit sized goals: Setting goals that are too ambitious can lead to procrastination. Set mini goals. Start small. Create a very-small and crisp to-do list. Never commit to more than what you can accomplish in a day. Make a practical plan and stick to it. Strict adherence to a small plan is a lot more effective than sitting on most of the tasks in a lengthy - detailed plan. List down small tasks that take less time and effort. Tick it off the list and celebrate your little wins.

2. Prioritise your tasks:  We end up wasting time on unimportant and non-priority tasks ending up with very little to no energy to execute the important ones. That’s why it is important to prioritise your tasks and check out the inevitable ones first. Spend your time and energy on the must-do’s like working out, reading a book, writing a blog or visiting your grandparents. When you prioritise your responsibilities you might have some time for leisure, but it never works the other way round. The ones who prioritise seldom procrastinate. 3. Block out your time:  Auditing your time is inevitable. Elon Musk doesn’t have 30 hours a day. It seems so because he gets 10x more things done in a day than a normal person. Chalk out specific time blocks in your calendar for specific tasks. This way, you will have time for everything that needs to be acted upon.

4. Focus on one task at a time:  Find out what is distracting you from the task at hand. Social media, OTT Platforms and Instagram reels are some of the common distractions. Make an effort to eliminate these distractions while carrying out a task. Focus on one task at a time. Multitasking is an asset only as long as it doesn’t fuel procrastination.

5. Work on personal accountability:  No amount of time management apps are going to be effective if you do not work on personal accountability. If you are reading this, then you have already figured out the habits that are hindering your personal growth. This is the first step to become a better version of yourself. Set mini goals and follow them diligently despite the obstacles.
